What Is Chirp
Chirp makes the padded back rollers with a hollow center and a groove down the middle. The groove leaves space for your spine while the padding presses against the muscles beside it. Its familiar Wheel+ three-pack lists for $89.99.
There's more to Chirp than wheels, though. Wheel XR adds textured surfaces, including the 4-inch Neck & Headache wheel. Relief Wheel Pro has interchangeable treads. Contour, which Chirp calls its decompression and massage table, is a reclining table with massage rollers and heat. Contrast pairs hot and cold therapy with pressure at the base of the skull. RPM and RPM Mini are powered rollers that Chirp directs toward the legs and feet.
Using a wheel or massage device to manage a health condition? Then a Letter of Medical Necessity lets you pay for it with HSA/FSA money. Halo, Chirp's TENS/EMS muscle stimulator, is the exception: it qualifies without a letter, as you'll see below.
Why Chirp Qualifies for HSA/FSA
A Chirp wheel or massage device qualifies once a licensed provider spells out its medical purpose for your health condition in your LMN. IRS Publication 502 includes “diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease” in its definition of medical expenses. These are some of the common conditions providers document, with the Chirp products that go with each:
- Chronic back pain. Chirp markets Wheel+ and Contour for work on the back muscles. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports short-term improvements in pain after massage for chronic low-back pain.
- Neck pain. Chirp's neck wheels, Contour and Contrast work the neck muscles with pressure, massage, heat or cold. MedlinePlus includes heat, cold and gentle massage among ways to reduce neck pain.
- Tension headaches. Chirp markets its 4-inch neck wheels and Contrast for tension around the base of the skull. Mayo Clinic says massage can relieve tight head, neck and shoulder muscles and may relieve headache pain for some people.
- Myofascial pain syndrome. Chirp's wheels press into muscles and fascia, the connective tissue wrapped around them, and the XR textures go after knots. Cleveland Clinic explains this condition's trigger points and lists foam rolling and myofascial release among ways to ease fascia pain.
- Plantar fasciitis. Chirp markets its 2-inch Foot Roller and RPM for this foot condition. Cleveland Clinic includes massage techniques for the foot and calf muscles among the ways to manage plantar fasciitis.
Not on the list? If your provider documents how a Chirp wheel or device helps you manage a different condition, it qualifies with an LMN too.
How to Get Chirp Covered With a Letter of Medical Necessity
There are two ways to get a Letter of Medical Necessity for your Chirp wheel or massage device:
- Through Crates, typically in under 24 hours. You'll spend 2 to 3 minutes on the online health assessment. A licensed provider reviews it and, if you qualify, issues your letter. The LMN renews each year and stays valid for 12 months at a time.
- Through your own doctor, a few days to a few weeks. Book a visit and say you want to pay with HSA/FSA funds. Ask them to document how a back roller or massage device helps prevent, manage, or reverse your condition. The letter you get from your doctor should be signed and dated, and the visit can involve a copay.
How to Buy Chirp With HSA/FSA Funds
Buy your Chirp wheel or massage device wherever you like, then get paid back from your HSA or FSA:
- Get your Letter of Medical Necessity first. Go through Crates or your own doctor, as covered above.
- Buy your Chirp product anywhere. Shop online or in store using your personal card. Save the itemized receipt showing which wheel or massage device you bought and how much you paid.
- Get your funds back. Let Crates file the claim for you with one-click reimbursement, or upload the letter and receipt yourself. If you paid from an HSA, file both away with your tax records.
Already bought a wheel? You can still get a letter now, and your account dates plus the letter decide what you can file. Next time, get the letter first.
Which Chirp Products Qualify
Chirp's wheels and massage devices qualify with an LMN connecting the product to your health condition, and Halo qualifies without one. For the wheels and massage devices, size and price don't matter: neither one changes eligibility.

Halo qualifies without an LMN. Halo is Chirp's wireless TENS/EMS unit, and the FDA cleared it for over-the-counter use. Our eligible-items list counts TENS units as eligible without a letter, so you can buy Halo with HSA/FSA funds and keep the itemized receipt.
Using pretax funds can save up to 30%. Say your combined tax rate is 30%: the $89.99 Wheel+ three-pack saves you about $27 in taxes, so the set comes out to $62.99. What you actually save depends on your own taxes, including state and payroll taxes where they apply.
