What Is WeightWatchers
WeightWatchers is the weight-loss program known for turning food choices into Points you track throughout the day. Its Points program combines a personalized food budget with an app for tracking meals, recipes and activity. You choose your food rather than ordering a fixed menu of packaged meals.
Core is the app-based membership, at a regular $24 a month on the month-to-month plan. Core+ adds virtual and in-person Workshops, with support options for diabetes, menopause and people taking GLP-1 medicines. WeightWatchers Clinic sells medical weight management through Med+, combining clinician care with the program. Its regular monthly membership is $149, with medicines billed separately.
For someone using the program to treat a health condition, the membership becomes a medical expense. A Letter of Medical Necessity documents that purpose so eligible program fees can be reimbursed from an HSA or FSA.
Why WeightWatchers Qualifies for HSA/FSA
WeightWatchers program and Workshop fees are HSA/FSA eligible with an LMN when weight loss treats a health condition. IRS Publication 502 defines medical expenses to include the “diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease”. Its weight-loss entry includes programs used as “a treatment for a specific disease diagnosed by a physician”, including membership and periodic meeting fees.
In your letter, a licensed provider connects the membership to the health condition it helps treat, which makes the dues HSA/FSA eligible. Some common conditions a provider can document include:
- Obesity. The USPSTF backs offering or referring adults with obesity to intensive behavioral weight-loss programs. Most pair eating and activity changes with self-monitoring, and some run as group sessions.
- Hypertension with overweight. MedlinePlus lists staying at a healthy body weight among the lifestyle changes for high blood pressure, and says your provider can help you find programs for losing weight.
- Type 2 diabetes with overweight. Losing 5% to 7% of your weight may help manage blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure, according to NIDDK, which suggests talking with your care team about joining a weight-loss program.
- Prediabetes with overweight. NIDDK points to the Diabetes Prevention Program, where people at high risk who lost 5% to 7% of their starting weight lowered their chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Coronary heart disease with excess weight. NHLBI includes a provider-guided weight-loss plan in treatment, since a healthy weight can help manage risk factors such as high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Another health condition counts too when your provider documents weight loss as part of treating it.
Prescription medicines are the one purchase here that needs no letter. Publication 502 counts prescription medicines as medical expenses on their own, so a GLP-1 from a WeightWatchers Clinic prescription is eligible without an LMN, as our FSA eligible items list also shows. The Med+ membership qualifies with an LMN, the same way as Core and Core+.
How to Get WeightWatchers Covered With a Letter of Medical Necessity
There are two ways to get a letter for your WeightWatchers membership:
- Through Crates, typically in under 24 hours. Take a 2 to 3 minute online health assessment. A licensed provider reviews it and, if you qualify, issues your letter for the membership. It stays valid for 12 months and renews each year.
- Through your own doctor, a few days to a few weeks. Book a visit, explain that you want to use HSA/FSA funds for a weight-loss program, and ask them to document how weight management helps treat your condition. Get a signed and dated letter. You may owe a copay.
How to Buy WeightWatchers With HSA/FSA Funds
Join WeightWatchers with your personal card, then get reimbursed for eligible membership fees.
- Get your Letter of Medical Necessity first. Use either route above before starting the membership you want covered.
- Buy your membership. Pay online with your personal card and keep the itemized receipt showing the service and amount paid. WeightWatchers provides receipts in your account’s billing settings.
- Get your money back. Crates one-click reimbursement files the claim for you, or upload the letter and receipt yourself. For an HSA, keep both with your tax records.
An existing membership is eligible going forward with an LMN, without canceling and rejoining. Dues during the letter’s term follow the documented membership; you do not need a new letter for every monthly charge. Our HSA vs. FSA guide explains the accounts’ different timing rules.
