What Is Google Pixel Watch
Google Pixel Watch is Google's round smartwatch for Android phones. It puts your messages, maps, workouts, and heart-rate readings on your wrist, so a walk around the neighborhood becomes something you can track over time. You can see how often you move, how hard you're working, and how your sleep changes from night to night.
Google currently sells Pixel Watch 5 and Pixel Watch 4, starting at $349.99, in 41 mm and 45 mm sizes with Wi-Fi and LTE options. The smaller size sits more neatly on a narrow wrist; the larger one gives you more screen. Health and fitness information lives in the Google Health app, formerly the Fitbit app.
Pixel Watch is a smartwatch, while Google's separate Fitbit line includes smaller trackers. Our Fitbit eligibility page covers those devices, and our fitness trackers guide covers wearables more broadly.
Why Google Pixel Watch Qualifies for HSA/FSA
Google Pixel Watch qualifies at its full purchase price when its primary purpose is preventing or managing a health condition, documented by a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). That letter connects the watch's health features to your care. Buying one simply to count steps for general wellness is a personal expense.
IRS Publication 502 includes the “diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease” in medical care. Its personal-use rule allows an everyday item when used “primarily to prevent or alleviate a physical or mental disability or illness.” That's the medical-purpose test behind the letter.
Some common conditions a provider can document include:
- Atrial fibrillation (AFib). Pixel Watch's on-demand ECG records your heart rhythm so you can share it with your clinician. A 2025 systematic review of 26 studies found smartwatches have excellent accuracy for detecting AFib.
- Type 2 diabetes. Step counts and activity goals help you stick to a diabetes exercise plan. The CDC calls physical activity a foundation of diabetes management and suggests tracking your progress with an app, activity tracker, or paper.
- Hypertension. Workout tracking and exercise heart-rate readings support an activity plan for high blood pressure. Mayo Clinic explains how exercise helps control blood pressure and recommends discussing target heart rates with your healthcare team.
- Obesity. The watch gives you feedback on movement within a weight-management plan. A systematic review of 31 studies found health wearables effective for reducing body weight and BMI in people with overweight or obesity and chronic conditions.
Your provider can document another condition too, when the watch's health features help manage it.
Google's heart tools do different jobs. The ECG app takes a 30-second heart rhythm reading on any Pixel Watch. Irregular rhythm notifications check for signs of AFib in the background on Pixel Watch 2 and newer, for people not already diagnosed with AFib. Both are FDA-cleared (ECG, notifications) and available in the U.S. for adults 22 and older.
Loss of Pulse Detection, FDA-cleared in 2025, is a separate emergency feature on Pixel Watch 3 and newer, available in the U.S. for adults 22 and older. Google says it isn't intended for people identified as being at high risk of sudden cardiac death.
How to Get Google Pixel Watch Covered With a Letter of Medical Necessity
There are two ways to get your Pixel Watch letter:
- Through Crates, typically in under 24 hours. Complete a 2 to 3 minute online health assessment. A licensed provider reviews your answers and, if you qualify, issues your letter for the watch. Your letter stays valid for 12 months and renews each year.
- Through your own doctor, a few days to a few weeks. Book a visit and explain that you want to buy a Pixel Watch with HSA/FSA funds. Ask your doctor to document how a smartwatch helps prevent, manage, or reverse your condition. Make sure the letter is signed and dated. You may owe a copay.
How to Buy Google Pixel Watch With HSA/FSA Funds
Choose where you want to buy your Pixel Watch, pay with your personal card, and get reimbursed from your HSA or FSA.
- Get your letter first. Use either route above so your medical purpose is documented before you shop.
- Buy your Pixel Watch anywhere. Pay with your personal card, online or in store, and keep the itemized receipt showing the watch and the amount paid.
- Get your money back. Crates one-click reimbursement files the claim for you, or upload the letter and receipt yourself. For an HSA, keep both with your tax records.
Our HSA vs. FSA guide explains the accounts' different spending timelines.
At a combined federal, state, and payroll tax rate near 30%, paying with pre-tax HSA/FSA money saves you about $120 on a $399.99 Pixel Watch 5. Your actual savings depend on your tax rates and how you fund the account.
Which Google Pixel Watch Models Qualify
Every Pixel Watch 5 and Pixel Watch 4 qualifies the same way, with an LMN, whatever size, finish or connectivity you choose. Your letter ties the watch to your condition; a bigger screen or LTE doesn't change that.
