What Is Noom
Noom puts food logging and short lessons on your phone. Its core program, Noom Weight, focuses on eating habits, activity and the everyday decisions behind weight management. You record meals, follow lessons and track your progress in the app.
The medication-free subscription costs about $70 for one month, $169 for four months or $209 for a year, according to Noom's regular price list. Noom Med adds access to clinicians and prescription weight-loss medicines when clinically appropriate. Some Med plans include medication; the branded-medication plan charges for it separately.
For your HSA or FSA, what matters is what you're paying for. A Noom plan used to manage a health condition has a medical purpose, and your letter documents it. A prescription your pharmacy bills on its own is already medical care and needs no letter.
Why Noom Qualifies for HSA/FSA
Noom Weight and Noom Med plans qualify with a Letter of Medical Necessity documenting their medical purpose. IRS Publication 502 includes expenses for “diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease”. Its Weight-Loss Program entry counts program fees when weight loss is “a treatment for a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, hypertension, or heart disease)”.
Losing weight to look better or feel healthier in general doesn't count, but the same Noom plan used to manage a health condition qualifies with an LMN. Some common conditions a provider can document include:
- Obesity. NHLBI describes behavioral weight-loss programs that combine reduced-calorie eating, activity goals and strategies for maintaining those changes.
- Hypertension. For adults with overweight or obesity, NHLBI says losing even 3% to 5% of body weight can improve blood pressure.
- Type 2 diabetes. For adults with diabetes and overweight, NIDDK recommends working with your care team on a weight-loss plan and names joining a weight-loss program as one option for support and behavioral counseling.
- Prediabetes. For adults with prediabetes and overweight, CDC recommends structured lifestyle-change programs that combine healthier eating, activity and weight loss to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
Other conditions count when your provider connects the weight-loss program to your medical care.
Medication your pharmacy bills needs no letter. Publication 502 counts prescription medicines on their own, so branded medication filled at your pharmacy is eligible without an LMN. Noom Med's all-inclusive plans put the program, clinical care and medication in one subscription, and that subscription qualifies with an LMN, just like Noom Weight.
How to Get Noom Covered With a Letter of Medical Necessity
For your Noom plan, you have two ways to get your letter:
- Through Crates, typically in under 24 hours. Complete a 2 to 3 minute online health assessment. A licensed provider reviews it and, if you qualify, issues your letter for the Noom membership. It stays valid for 12 months and renews each year.
- Through your own doctor, a few days to a few weeks. Book a visit and explain that you want to use HSA/FSA funds for Noom. Ask them to document how a weight-loss program helps prevent, manage, or reverse your condition and to sign and date the letter. You may owe a copay.
How to Buy Noom With HSA/FSA Funds
Choose your Noom subscription, pay personally, then get the eligible program fees back from your HSA or FSA:
- Get your Letter of Medical Necessity first. Use Crates or your own doctor, as described above.
- Buy your Noom membership. Pay with your personal card wherever you purchase the subscription. Keep the itemized receipt showing the program and amount paid.
- Get your money back. Crates one-click reimbursement files the claim for you, or upload the letter and receipt yourself. For an HSA, keep both with your tax records.
Publication 969 explains that eligible HSA expenses occur after the account is established, while FSA expenses fall within the coverage period. Our HSA vs. FSA guide explains the account differences.
