What Is Secretlab
Secretlab makes ergonomic chairs, including its flagship TITAN Evo and the ATLAS task chair. Picture a high-backed chair at your desk, with lumbar support, a head pillow and armrests that move to fit you. And if back or neck pain makes sitting hard, that chair can be part of your home-office setup.
The TITAN Evo comes in leatherette or fabric, and its lumbar support moves up and down and in and out. The NanoGen Edition steps up to Secretlab's premium upholstery and foam. The Secretlab ATLAS is its task chair, with lumbar support built right in, adjustable seat depth, and a seat and backrest that tilt together. At regular U.S. prices, the chairs below run from $499 to $799.
With a Letter of Medical Necessity that ties the chair's support to your health condition, you can buy it with your HSA or FSA. Comparing chairs from other brands? See our guide to office chairs and HSA/FSA eligibility. Secretlab also sells MAGNUS Pro and MAGNUS Evo sit-to-stand desks; our standing desks guide covers that category.
Why Secretlab Qualifies for HSA/FSA
A Secretlab chair qualifies once an LMN documents the medical reason you need it. The reason is a health condition that the right seated support can help you manage.
IRS Publication 502 defines medical expenses as:
Medical expenses are the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease and for the purpose of affecting any part or function of the body.
The same guidance counts equipment you need for those purposes, too. Some common conditions a licensed provider can document in your Letter of Medical Necessity include:
- Chronic back pain. OSHA's guidance on office chairs says a backrest should "provide adequate lumbar support," and that working in poorly supported postures "may lead to back pain and fatigue." The TITAN Evo's lumbar support adjusts in height and depth, and the ATLAS has lumbar support built into its backrest.
- Neck pain. Mayo Clinic recommends adjusting your desk, chair, and computer so the monitor is at eye level, and using chair armrests to support your arms. Secretlab's adjustable seat height and armrests let you set the chair up that way.
- Sciatica. Mayo Clinic's sciatica guidance lists a seat with good lower-back support, armrests and a swivel base as one way to protect your back. Secretlab's lumbar-support chairs check all three boxes.
Something else that makes sitting hard counts too, once your provider documents the chair for it in your letter.
The medical-purpose rule is the same for an HSA and an FSA; our HSA vs. FSA guide explains where they differ.
How to Get Secretlab Covered With a Letter of Medical Necessity
For a Secretlab chair, there are two ways to get your Letter of Medical Necessity:
- Through Crates, typically in under 24 hours. Getting a letter for your chair starts with a short online health assessment that takes about 2 to 3 minutes. A licensed provider reviews it, and if you qualify, your letter is issued for the chair. You get 12 months from one letter, and it renews each year.
- Through your own doctor, a few days to a few weeks. Book a visit and say you want to use HSA/FSA funds for a Secretlab ergonomic chair. Ask them to document how an ergonomic chair helps prevent, manage, or reverse your condition. Your doctor should sign and date the letter, and the visit may mean a copay.
How to Buy Secretlab With HSA/FSA Funds
Get the letter, then pick out the chair: buy it wherever you like and get your HSA/FSA funds back.
- Get your Letter of Medical Necessity first. Use either route above, Crates or your own doctor, before you buy.
- Buy your chair anywhere. Pay with your personal card, online or in store, and keep the itemized receipt showing the chair and amount paid.
- Get your funds back. Crates files the claim for your chair when you choose one-click reimbursement; you can instead upload the letter and receipt yourself. With an HSA, keep both with your tax records.
