What Is Waterpik
Waterpik makes the countertop and cordless water flossers you see beside bathroom sinks: a reservoir holds water, and a handheld tip directs a pulsing stream between teeth and along the gumline. For someone working around dental hardware or finding string floss awkward, that different cleaning method can be useful.
The familiar Aquarius countertop model has a separate handle and pressure dial. Cordless models put the reservoir in the handle, while Sonic-Fusion combines a toothbrush with water flossing. The examples below span roughly $70 to $180 at current manufacturer list prices, before sales.
The useful question for your benefits account is how the device fits your dental care. A Waterpik used for a specific gum condition has a different medical purpose from one bought simply because you prefer the feeling of water flossing.
Why Waterpik Qualifies for HSA/FSA
Waterpik qualifies with a Letter of Medical Necessity that connects the water flosser to a specific health condition. The letter documents what the device helps you manage and why your provider recommends it.
IRS Publication 502 includes the “diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease” in its definition of medical expenses. Dental services such as cleanings qualify as medical care in their own right; the home-use Waterpik follows the LMN route. Waterpik’s own eligibility guidance gives gingivitis as an example and directs customers to a dentist or periodontist for the letter.
Your clinician may consider water irrigation as part of care for conditions including:
- Gingivitis. Waterpik names this gum condition on its LMN form. A 2025 review of 18 trials found modest benefits for some gum and bleeding measures, with mixed plaque findings. That is evidence about oral irrigation, not a promise about a particular Waterpik model.
- Periodontitis. Mayo Clinic’s home-care guidance includes water flossers among options for cleaning between teeth, alongside professional dental care.
- Peri-implant mucositis. For inflammation around an implant, a systematic review in BDJ Open examined oral irrigation alongside brushing as part of managing peri-implant disease.
- Peri-implantitis. The same review covers this more extensive implant-related disease. A provider can assess whether irrigation belongs in your home-care plan; professional care remains essential.
Dental expenses have an account-type wrinkle: FSAFEDS lists Waterpik for its limited-expense FSA, with an LMN and detailed receipt. Your own plan’s documentation rules apply. Our HSA vs. FSA guide explains how the accounts differ.
Other water-flosser brands follow the same medical-purpose rule: an LMN connects the device to the condition it helps manage.
Which Waterpik Models Qualify
Waterpik’s eligibility guidance covers its water flossers and Sonic-Fusion; the letter should identify the device that supports your care. A countertop design, cordless handle, or different color does not establish medical necessity by itself.
| Waterpik model | Design | Approximate list price |
|---|---|---|
| Aquarius WP-660 | Countertop water flosser | $100 |
| Cordless Plus 5000 WF-26 | Portable water flosser | $70 |
| Cordless Advanced 2.0 WP-580 | Rechargeable water flosser | $100 |
| Sonic-Fusion 2.0 SF-03 | Toothbrush with built-in water flossing | $180 |
Prices are rounded from Waterpik’s Aquarius, Sonic-Fusion, Cordless Plus 5000, and Cordless Advanced 2.0 pages, checked October 15, 2026. Retail prices vary. An LMN for the water flosser does not establish a medical purpose for every separately purchased item carrying the Waterpik name. The FSA-eligible items list places Waterpik alongside other documented medical expenses.
How to Get Waterpik Covered With an LMN
Get your letter before you buy, through your own provider or through Crates, then keep the itemized receipt with it. If you use your own provider, Waterpik offers a printable dentist-completed LMN form.
Option 1: Through Your Doctor or Dentist
If you already see a provider for your condition, they can write the letter:
- Book a visit and say you want to buy a Waterpik water flosser with HSA/FSA funds
- Ask them to document how this product category helps prevent, manage, or reverse your condition
- Make sure the letter is signed and dated
- Timeline: a few days to a few weeks, and you may owe a copay
Option 2: Through Crates
Crates writes letters for Waterpik water flossers.
Crates streamlines the same process online:
- Complete a short health assessment, about 2 to 3 minutes
- A licensed provider reviews it, typically within 24 to 48 hours
- If you qualify, your Letter of Medical Necessity is issued for the Waterpik water flosser
- Buy the Waterpik water flosser with your personal card at any retailer
- Use Crates one-click reimbursement to get your HSA/FSA funds back
- Your LMN stays valid for 12 months and renews each year
You do not need a pharmacy prescription; the letter itself is what establishes eligibility.
